As massive, life-threatening fires blaze across southern California, we reflect on the fires we saw here in Colorado last summer.
The summer of 2024 saw an outbreak of numerous wildfires, including some that burned near highly populated areas in the foothills of the Front Range. The Alexander Mountain Fire and Stone Canyon Fire threatened homes in Boulder and Larimer Counties and caused thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. In late July and early August, these two fires alone burned more than 10,000 acres, destroyed more than 50 homes and structures, and claimed at least one life.
Natural disasters provoke stressful times for affected residents. Thomas Myers spoke with two residents that live near Carter Lake as the fires burned near their homes and evacuation seemed imminent, as well as individuals from the Boulder Office of Disaster Management on how residents cope when facing a wildfire near their homes and tips on how to be prepared in the event of such a disaster.
