A Different Path to Graduation: How GOAL High School Re-engages Colorado Students KGNU News

For students who struggle in a traditional school environment, falling behind academically can be only one part of a much larger story. Housing instability, family responsibilities, work, absenteeism and other challenges can make staying on a conventional path to graduation increasingly difficult.

GOAL High School, a statewide online public high school with drop-in centers across Colorado, offers students an alternative built around flexibility and individualized support. In interviews with KGNU, CEO Jill Toussaint, Director of Communications Alan Van Norman, and Regional Principal Dr. Staves discussed the circumstances that can lead students to seek a different educational environment and how GOAL works to help them reconnect with school.

The conversation explores how technology has changed online education, the role relationships with educators play in keeping students engaged, and why success isn’t always measured by how quickly a student earns a diploma. Dr. Staves also shares stories from his work with students in the Denver area, illustrating how challenges outside the classroom can affect a young person’s education and what can happen when students find a school environment that works for them.

Together, their perspectives offer a look at the changing role of alternative education in Colorado and the students who are finding a different path toward graduation.
