What shows do you host on KGNU and how long have you been with the station?
Currently I host Sound Lab on the third Thursday and Dusty Grooves on the fourth Friday of every month, and a handful of Blues Legacy shifts throughout the year. I started volunteering in 2006 after I graduated from CU Law and got on the air in 2009 doing Sleepless Nights. After a while I started doing some Afternoon Sound Alternative shows, which I still try to fit in every now and then despite that pesky day job.
Who is your favorite artist and/or album of all time?
Aww man, this question again – how can you pick just one? Over the years I’ve mostly been into rock, blues, jazz and R&B, and once my musical tastes started to solidify in the early 90s, I used to answer this question with Achtung Baby by U2. Then it shifted to Road Apples by The Tragically Hip, or Too Far To Care by the Old 97s, or Woodface by Crowded House…but what about Calexico? R.E.M.? Wilco? Stevie Ray Vaughan? The White Stripes? Once I start pulling on this thread, I wind up feeling bad about all the artists I’ve omitted. Let’s go with the one constant throughout the years: A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi.
What is your Zodiac sign and what (if anything) does it say about you?
Aquarius, which means I’m emotionally distant and too much in my own head for my own good. But I’m on the cusp with Pisces, which is probably why I’m such a romantic at heart…if you can wait around long enough for me to realize it.
If you could have any musician’s record collection, whose would it be?
I remember reading a few years ago that Dan Auerbach was spinning DJ sets while touring the country with the Black Keys, late night at local clubs after their show. I’m guessing he’s got some pretty sweet stuff I could use for Blues Legacy and Dusty Grooves.
What song do you never get tired of playing on air?
I try not to repeat songs too often (unless it’s one of my Halloween or Christmas shows) so I’d have to say my theme song: ‘Enter Sandman’ by Richard Cheese. Which is good, because I play it to start every show, and I sort of picked it as a lark years ago without really considering at the time what might happen if I wound up hating it. Ha!
What is something most people would be surprised to learn about you?
I used to sing. A lot. I was always in choirs and musicals, from grade school and church to various vocal ensembles in high school and all through college. Even sang in a rock band for a while. Never had a professional caliber voice (baritone) but was good enough to win awards along the way and minor in music performance. These days my singing is mostly reserved for the car, the shower, and situations where I can embarrass my kids the most.
