Food Banks and Other Resources in the Denver Metro Area You Should Know About

Food insecurity is a mounting problem for Coloradans amid the continued government shutdown, which has become the longest in US history. Colorado is among 23 states that sued the Trump administration last week over cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The result of the U.S. District Court of Rhode Island lawsuit was a court order requiring the USDA to release SNAP funds. The federal government has opted to only partially pay out SNAP benefits, which will result in less assistance for some, and no assistance for others. About 600,000 Coloradans rely on SNAP.

Governor Polis recently successfully requested $10 million in emergency state funding for food banks, plus $7.5 million for recipients of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program.

Amid the cuts and uncertainty, Colorado food banks have seen increased demand, at a time when COVID-19-era financial supports are already running out. “We haven’t ever seen something like this before,” said Kristen Bohanon of the Sister Carmen Community Center food bank. “And so we don’t really know what it’s gonna look like or how bad it’s gonna be, other than bad.”
