September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. The Second Wind Fund of Boulder County offers direct counseling services to low income youth that do not have the financial resources to access such services otherwise.
Mary Campbell, a high school counselor in Boulder Valley and a board member with the Second Wind Fund of Boulder County, says that suicide is the leading cause of death among young people in Colorado. “The most recent healthy kids data that came out suggests that 7% of high school students have attempted suicide in the last 12 months and 5.4% of middle school students have attempted in the last 12 months. So we know that it is increasingly common and that it is a very large issue.”
