The minimum wage in the city of Boulder and also Boulder County increased on January 1st. Now, minimum wage workers in the city will make $15.57 an hour, while unincorporated Boulder County workers will make $16.57 an hour.

The state of Colorado’s minimum wage is $14.81 per hour for non-tipped employees.

KGNU’s Don Davis spoke with two locals – one professor and one business owner – about the minimum wage increase. First, Davis talked with Tara McKinnish, professor of economics at the University of Colorado – Boulder.  She is also editor of the Journal of Population Economics and a research fellow of IZA, the Institute of Labor Economics, a non-profit research institute dedicated to research on labor markets, inequality and behavior.

Don Davis also spoke with Cristian Piñon, general manager and co-owner of Efrain’s of Boulder Mexican Restaurant.
