Weekend wildfire update

Fourth of July weekend saw continuing wildfire threats, with firefighting teams making small containment gains.

The Aspen Acres fire is the largest burning fire in Colorado right now, burning over 86,000 acres after the Fourth of July holiday and now sits at roughly 13 percent containment. Nearly 180 structures have been lost to the fire burning southwest of Pueblo.

Damage assessment teams will be releasing reports within the week of the number of homes damaged in the impacted area. Evacuation and pre-evacuations are still in place for Pueblo, Huerfano, Custer, and Fremont counties.

As of Saturday, Gunnison County is under evacuation with the Gold Mountain fire moving northeast; steep conditions and favorable fire growth conditions mean the fire remains zero percent contained. Saturday also brought new evacuation orders for the Willow Fire burning west of Leadville and the Ferris Fire in Montezuma County.

ICE detained a person in Southeast Denver Sunday

The Colorado Rapid Response Network reports that ICE detained one person in Denver yesterday morning. 4 CORRN confirmers on the scene reported at 10:30 A-M that a father was detained by agents and separated from his family near S Tamarac Dr and E Eastman Ave.

CORRN is a coalition of organizations working together and with volunteers to verify and respond to ICE activity in the state. This ICE incident follows a pattern of stops made by ICE across the state where agents use one or more large SUVs, in this case – three to block someone’s vehicle to detain them.

E-bike rebates in Denver

A new round of e-bike rebates for Denver residents is set for this week.

The city’s program distributes a limited number of e-bike vouchers, worth $675, throughout the year. It’s deducted from the price of an e-bike or e-cargo bike purchased at participating bike shops, according to a City of Denver press release.

To take part, you’ll need to live within the City and County of Denver and be at least sixteen years old. There are also income restrictions: your household has to be below the median income for your area and household size.

This round of e-bike rebates starts Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. Anyone interested will need an account on Denver’s e-bike rebate portal.

New Boulder Arts District initiative

Beginning last Friday, a new citywide initiative will attempt to bridge the gap between downtown Boulder and North Boulder for the upcoming First Friday monthly artwalk by utilizing HOP and SKIP bus routes. Downtown will run from 4 to 7 pm and NoBo from 6 to 9 pm.

NoBo has been Boulder’s established First Friday venue for over a decade, originally starting in 2009.

Downtown’s First Friday presence is much newer – the goal now being to connect the two events. The Boulder Vision Grant, an $8,500 grant awarded by the city to the Boulder Chamber Foundation, supports the transportation-specific portions of the project.
