War Powers Resolution: Make Them Hear You KGNU News

Senators Chuck Schumer, Tim Kaine, and Rand Paul expect the Senate to vote on whether to formally authorize the Trump administration’s military actions in Venezuela by the end of this week. President Donald Trump did not notify Congress ahead of the attack, violating the War Powers Act.

Some claim this is an arrest of an individual and therefore not an act of war. Others point out that we brought in our most powerful battleship, killed 80 people including civilians, and bombed Caracas, all clearly acts of war.

Over in the House, Minority leader Hakeem Jeffries doesn’t know if or when there will be a vote. House Concurrent Resolution 64 requires Trump to stop all U.S. military combat or attacks against Venezuela unless Congress officially declares war or passes a law specifically allowing the use of force. House Concurrent Resolution 61 would require the President to stop using the U.S. military to fight alleged drug cartels in the Western Hemisphere unless Congress gives specific permission or declares an official war.

Democrats need at least four Republican senators to back the resolution for it to pass — so the administration is pressuring Republicans to support the military action. Greene, Democrats and some fellow disgruntled Republicans have questioned the president’s motives, claiming an American president can’t order military action without congressional authorization.
