Gabe Evans wins Colorado’s 8th Congressional District over Yadira Caraveo
Republican Gabe Evans has officially won Colorado’s 8th Congressional District over Democratic incumbent Yadira Caraveo.
The race was called on Sunday, after Caraveo conceded.
Evans won by less than a percentage-point – only 2,596 votes between the two candidates. With Caraveo conceding, Evans will flip the district which could help Republicans hold onto power in the House of Representatives.
Evans’ victory gives Republicans 215 seats in the House. They need 218 to maintain their majority. The race represents the biggest victory for the GOP in Colorado since 2014, The Colorado Sun reports.
Caraveo was the first Latina elected to Congress from Colorado. Evans, also Hispanic, is an Army veteran and former police officer.
The National Republican Congressional Committee said in a statement that they are looking forward to seeing valuable results from Congressman-elect Gabe Evans, who works towards the “American Dream.”
Colorado’s 8th Congressional District is the newest district in the state and includes most of Adams County, as well as portions of Larimer and Weld counties.
Colorado exit polls results
The three biggest issues, according to a Colorado exit poll, was immigration, abortion, and housing. The poll was conducted by New Bridge Strategy and Aspect Strategic from October 24 to November 4 and covered 822 voters statewide who self-identified as having cast a ballot or were planning on voting.
About 64% said that the outcome would affect their family’s lives. A majority of voters said they were satisfied with Colorado’s systems of voting. The vast majority of voters agreed that they like directly voting on many different ballot measures, which was down about 3% from when they were asked the same question in March.
Four in ten voters said they were very well informed, while a smaller voter pool said they felt well informed, with a mere 8% saying they were not informed enough on the ballot measures.
Colorado didn’t receive a massive shift toward Donald Trump this year compared to other years, and many people considered the housing crisis over other states. Kevin Ingham and Lori Weigel conducted.
Plea hearing of Colorado funeral home postponed
A snowstorm forced a Colorado court to postpone a hearing in the case of the Colorado funeral home owners accused of piling 190 bodies and giving families fake ashes.
Jon and Carie Hallford – owners of the Return to Nature Funeral Home in Colorado Springs – were expected to plead guilty at the Friday hearing, in connection with over 200 charges of corpse abuse, theft, forgery, and money laundering.
Last month, the Hallfords pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges as part of an agreement that acknowledged defrauding customers and the federal government.
The couple began stashing bodies in a dilapidated, room-temperature building outside the city as far back as 2019, giving families dry concrete in place of cremains and spending customers’ money on cars, laser body sculpting, and other luxury items. That’s according to The Denver Post. They also received nearly $900,000 in pandemic relief funds, which they spent on themselves instead of their business.
The Hallford’s hearing has been rescheduled for November 22.
In the aftermath of this case and others similar to it, lawmakers revitalized Colorado’s funeral home regulations.
