The U.S. Department of Justice sues Denver

The U.S. Department of Justice sued Denver yesterday over the city’s ban on assault weapons.

The suit comes a day after city leaders rejected a demand from the DOJ to repeal the law, which has been in place since 1989. It restricts the possession and sale of guns with magazines carrying more than 15 rounds.

The DOJ argues the ban violates the Second Amendment. But Mayor Mike Johnston and other Denver officials say it has saved lives and vow to defend it in court.

Orgs request rehearing of Craig coal plant renewal order

A coal-fired power plant in Northwest Colorado is still running after the Department of Energy issued emergency orders for it to remain open in December, citing concerns about grid reliability and increasing demands for electricity.

That’s despite the long-term plans of the plant’s operators to shut it down in 2025, and protests from the state of Colorado.

Rocky Mountain Community Radio’s Caroline Llanes has more.

Craig 1’s operators, Tri-State Generation and the Platte River Power Authority, provide power to customers across southwestern Colorado and the Front Range.

Democratic National Committee visit Denver

Denver is making its case to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention as a party delegation visits the city this week. During the three-day showcase, city leaders will highlight hotels, restaurants, and venues including the Colorado Convention Center and Ball Arena.

They also plan to show off the city’s infrastructure. Denver is one of five finalists to host the DNC in 2028. Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and Philadelphia are also in the running. Democrats are expected to choose the host city early next year. If Denver is chosen, the convention would bring tens of thousands of visitors to Colorado.
