The Last Wild Buffalo Herd

Twenty years ago Mike Mease co-founded the Buffalo Field Campaign, to bear witness to the plight of the last free roaming herd of wild buffalo in the US, in and around Yellowstone National Park. Mease and the volunteers with the Buffalo Field Campaign seek to  protect the animals and educate people about the aggressive land management and animal control practices being used by authorities in Montana to control the herd. Mease is on a tour of the western US speaking about the wild buffalo and he is in Boulder for the opening of a new exhibit at the Boulder History Museum that honors the animal which was named the National Mammal.

The grand opening of the exhibit happens the weekend of September 20 and 21st and the exhibit will be open to the public until January 2020.

On September 20th from 6.30-8.30pm, the museum hosts a round table discussion on solutions that allow wild buffalo and other wildlife to roam, wild and free! Join Buffalo Field Campaign’s Co-founder, Campaign Coordinator, and 22 year field veteran Mike Mease, and BFC Board Vice President, Executive Director, and Nez Perce Tribal Member, James Holt, and Jim Bailey, Coordinator, MT Wild Bison Restoration Coalition for meaningful conversations focused on “Solutions for America’s Last Wild Buffalo.” Panelists include representatives from Southern Arapaho and Northern Arapaho Tribes, wildlife biologists, and environmentalists. Attendees will leave with a full understanding of the current capture for slaughter management plan for wild, migratory bison, as well as pathways towards protection, restoration, and sustainable herds of wild free roaming buffalo in North America.

On September 21st from 10am-11.30am there will be Coffee and Conversation on solutions that allow wild buffalo and other wildlife to roam, wild and free.
