History books often glaze over the period in Europe just after the fall of the Roman Empire and before the rise of the feudal states. The so-called Dark Ages existed in the shadows of their better documented historical book ends. But there were plenty of engrossing events going on.
The Dark Queens: The Bloody Rivalry that Forged the Medieval World is a book that zeros in on two sixth century queens who married into the early dynasty that consolidated power in what is now modern day France and somewhat beyond.
