KGNU was joined by Boulder Mayor Aaron Brockett and Charlene Hoffman, CEO of the Boulder Convention and Visitors Bureau, to discuss the Sundance Film Festival’s move from Park City, Utah, to Boulder. Brockett and Hoffman described their experience attending the last Sundance Film Festival in Park City, and expectations for locals and visitors alike.

“ It’s in the slowest time of the year for Boulder. It’s gonna support our hotels, our restaurants, our retailers, and you know, the hospitality workers,” Mayor Brockett said. “So knowing that that’s coming for 10 years straight at a minimum is a real gift, and the cultural impact is going to be enormous. We’ve always had a vibrant arts and culture scene here in Boulder, but this is going to take it to the next level.”

Hoffman and Brockett talked about the $34 million of mostly in-kind incentives Boulder is offering over the next 10 years, including free police overtime and parking downtown. They also touched on housing and renting solutions that are being planned for the festival.

In October, Boulder City Council passed the Festival Lodging Rental License, which allows homeowners to temporarily rent out their homes during Sundance. Mayor Brockett said “we are about to pass a rule that allows tenants to participate as well. What we’re hoping is that people can rent out their house or apartment and make a decent chunk of money…”
