Special Election in Lyons Over New Low Income Housing Development

The town that was physically divided into islands by the flooding of 2013 is now divided over a March 24th election. Update: The measure was defeated with 614 votes against the proposal, and 498 votes in favor of it.

Ballot measure 2 asks voters to allow for about 6 acres of Bohn park property to be used for low income housing. However a group opposing the measure Save Our Parks and Open Space (SOPOS) says that after all that was lost in the flood, the town can’t afford to lose more land, even if it is for housing.

“The bulk of what we lost was affordable housing.”

Jasmine Lok with the group Lyons Stronger which supports ballot measure 2 says two trailer parks that were destroyed in the 2013 floods essentially removed all the low income housing in the town.
