Social Entrepreneurship and Solutions Journalism

David Bornstein is a journalist, author, co-founder of the Solutions Journalism Network, and advocate for the idea of social entrepreneurship. According to Bornstein, a social entrepreneur is “an Individual who uses the traditional entrepreneurial skills to solve social problems.” By using the skills of entrepreneurs to find and create solutions for social problems rather than to create capital gain, Bornstein believes we could help fight big issues prevalent in the modern world. Organizations like the Citizens Climate Lobby, an environmental group who use lobbying tactics to put the ecological problems and solutions into the hands of politicians around the United States, are a crucial example of using social entrepreneurship to push reforms in today’s wealth run political climate.

Bornstein is also the co-founder of the Solutions Journalism Network, an organization that, according to their website, “trains and connect journalists to cover what’s missing in today’s news: how people are responding to problems.”

“Historically there has been a kind of reluctance among journalists to report on potential solutions because of the fear they will fall into a sort of advocacy, so we help journalists understand how to do it in a much more rigorous way.”

David Bornstein will present at the Heroes and Hope event on November 16th to support Resource Central, a local nonprofit dedicated to conserving natural resources.
