How Kroger’s merger with Albertsons will affect people in Colorado

The proposed merger between the country’s two largest grocery chains drew a packed house in Denver on Wednesday. US Federal Trade Commission chairperson Lina Khan joined Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser and members of the public for what was billed as “a community listening session.”

The topic: Should grocery giant Kroger be allowed to buy its biggest competitor Albertsons? Kroger owns King Soopers. Albertson’s owns Safeway. If approved, the close to $25 billion deal would make Kroger the owner of all Colorado King Soopers, City Market, Albertsons, and Safeway stores by early 2024. Kroger would then own around 44 percent of the entire grocery store market in Colorado.
