Sacred Lines: Religious Narratives in Superhero and Science Fiction Stories

In recent years, superheroes have become synonymous with summer blockbusters and this year is shaping up to be no different. Film versions of comic books like Wonder Woman, Guardians of the Galaxy, and Spider Man will draw millions of new and old fans to theaters around the globe. In this episode, a panel of guests discuss some of the religious aspects of these superhero and science fiction narratives, as well as the fiercely devoted fans they attract.

Host Art Bamford is joined by Rick Stevens, Associate Professor of Media Studies at CU-Boulder and author of the book, Captain America: Masculinity & Violence: The Evolution of a National Icon (Syracuse University Press); Will Ramsey, a graduate student in Religious Studies at CU-Boulder whose work explores science fiction and popular music; and Rachel Watson, a PhD student in Media Studies at CU-Boulder whose research deals with depictions and representations of space exploration in popular culture.
