Resistance Radio: Students Walk Out Calling for Gun Control

“It affects us in schools every day and we want to go to school and feel safe, so we’re definitely part of this conversation and we’re definitely willing to be part of the solution.”

Since the latest school shooting on February 14th at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland Florida, students around the country are raising their voices calling for gun control legislation.

Led by Women’s March Youth, students across the country are staging a school walk out on March 14th at 10:00 am for 17 minutes to honor the lives that were lost as well as to peacefully protest for stricter gun laws, aiming to make schools a safer place for everyone.

Keira Bond, an 8th grader at Louisville Middle School, says she was surprised at some of the reaction to the Parkland students speaking  out and calling for gun control.  “I was just so surprised that adults would be selfish enough to not event consider compromising on gun control laws.”

Bond says that while she personally feels safe at her school in Louisville, she understands that is not the case for many students around the country.  “As students we feel the need to stand up for other students across the nation who don’t have this opportunity.”  Bond will be joining other students from her school in walking out from school on Wednesday March 14th. Bond says that school administrators are supportive of the students who are planning on walking out, but reiterates that no student is obliged to join the movement.

Some critics of the the new wave of youth speaking out in favor of gun control, say that young people should not have a say in these type of complex policy decisions, but Bond says that this is exactly the time for legislators to listen to young people.

“It affects us in schools every day and we want to go to school and feel safe, so we’re definitely part of this conversation and we’re definitely willing to be part of the solution.”
