Resistance Radio: Rise Up And Sing!

Songs and singing them together has always been an important part of community building and social movements. Pete Seeger once said that if this world survives a hundred years from now, it may well be because of people singing together. In the wake of the election, many people are seeking solace, community, and respite from negative news and discouraging prospects for peace, social justice, and environmental protection. As part of the resurgence of community activism, a sing along group was begun to provide a space to sing together.

The group meets in the KGNU Community Room on the first Sunday of the month, from 3-6 PM. Elena Klaver facilitates the group which follows a round robin style, where each person has the opportunity to lead a song, request a song, request that someone sing a specific song, or simply pass. This form allows for equal participation among all present, and prevents anyone from dominating.

Many people bring the book, Rise Up Singing, a collection of over 1,200 songs put together by Annie Peterson and Peter Blood, long time musicians, Quakers, and peace and social justice activists. Their web page, www.riseupandsing.org, has information on the many singing groups that exist or are starting nationwide, as well as information on the health benefits of singing together.
