Resistance Radio – Educators for Justice

“We’re just very worried about what’s going to happen to our students and the direction that our country currently seems to be headed.”

Angela Anderson a psychology and economics teacher at Bear Creek High School in Jefferson County says Educators for Justice formed in the weeks after the election in 2016 with a group of teachers who work in different metro area school Districts. “We’re all teachers who are passionate about social justice have several similar interests along those lines and we’re just very worried about what’s going to happen to our students and the direction that our country currently seems to be headed, especially our students in our minority communities and our students who are living in high poverty communities.

Anderson says the racist rhetoric that emerged during the presidential campaign along with privatization of education were major concerns for the group. “We know that that takes money away from our public schools and we feel that those resources really need to be invested in our schools.”

On Monday February 20th the group is organizing a Rally for Justice at the Greek Amphitheater in Denver’s Civic Center Park from 1-4pm.

In addition to holding the February 20th rally, the group is organizing know your rights trainings for students and are reaching out to legislators about their concerns. The group is currently trying to get caucus status withing the Colorado Educators Association (CEA) which would give them more capacity for political organizing.
