DACA recipients and immigrant rights allies gathered at Senator Michael Bennet’s Denver office this morning for an action asking the Democrat to take decisive action for immigrants. DACA or Defered action for childhood arrivals was an Obama era program that allowed some undocumented immigrants, brought here as children, who had no criminal convictions to be able to live and work without fear of deportation. Donald Trump rescinded the program earlier this year. Gladis Ibarra, one of the DACA recipients at today’s action says that while Senator Bennet has traditionally been supportive of immigrants, he has failed to take decisive action of late.

Ibarra says several Democrats have said they will withhold their vote on the upcoming federal budget until a clean DREAM Act is addressed, but Senator Bennet has not committed to withhold his vote.
“Senator Bennet has always supported my community, he’s a supporter of the DREAM Act. I’ve been trying to get a meeting with him so I could personally tell him how this impacts me in my life and why I think it’s important that he withholds his vote on the budget bill.”
Ibarra, who was brought to the US when she was 7 years old, says that DACA has changed the lives of her and her sisters.
“I was so grateful, to this day…it’s been a blessing. Just to have the opportunity to prove myself. I am a good person, I can contribute to this community, I can contribute to the country, as opposed to what people hear and think of of undocumented folks.”
