Angela Palermo has a conversation with trans woman writer and activist Daliah Husu. Daliah is the author of the memoir I Am Woman: Surviving the Past, the Present and the Future.
Daliah grew up in the slums of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic before coming to the United States at the age of eight. We discuss her early years in Santo Domingo, how she adjusted to life as an immigrant in the U.S., her relationship with her “difficult” mother, her brief stint as a sex worker as well as her experiences with drug and alcohol abuse.
Lastly, she talks about the recent anti-immigrant turn in American politics and, as a queer Latina, her sorrow over the Pulse Night Club shooting in Orlando. For more information about Daliah and her work, please visit her website www.daliahhusu.com.
