OutSources: Hina Wong-Kalu Teaches Aloha KGNU News

Respectfully called Kuma (teacher) Hina, she was in Colorado to deliver a keynote address and screen a film about her work at the Transforming Gender conference at CU Boulder.

A proud and out two-spirited (mahu) transgender woman since her youth, she has received many awards including national recognition through the Ellison Onizuka Award in Education.

She is chair of the O’ahu Burial Council over seeing management of ancestral burial grounds. She underscores the need for aloha in teaching and all that she and we do. She urges us to focus on the we not the me.

More information about Hina Wong-Kalu can be found on Facebook and TEDX Mauii. You can learn more about Kuma Hina, the award winning documentary shown on PBS and its adaption for children, In the Middle at https://kumuhina.com/ or see a trailer on YouTube.
