Other Lands Other Dreams: Kathy Kelly

“One of the ways we can stop the next war, all of us, is to keep trying to tell the truth about our present and past wars.”

Kathy Kelly, founder of the peace group Voices for Creative Nonviolence has visited Iraq and Afghanistan many times and seeks to put a human face on war with a view to finding peaceful alternatives. “For many years I think people int he United States couldn’t help but think that maybe there was really only one person living in all of Iraq – that would have been Saddam Hussein – because that’s all you heard about, Saddam and weapons of mass destruction and very, very rarely were we encouraged to think about or to have feelings about children – over 1/2 million of them the United Nations said died as a direct result of economic sanctions against Iraq.”  Kathy Kelly says peace will not happen until the United States owns up to its role in waging war, “one of the ways we can stop the next war, all of us, is to keep trying to tell the truth about our present and past wars.”

Kathy Kelly will speak about her own experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan on Saturday November 7th  from 1-2pm at the Denver Art Museum, Ponti Hall, as part of the Creative in Residency program, part of Warm Cookies of the Revolution.
