National Poetry Month: Denver poet Phil Woods

April is National Poetry Month and in celebration KGNU’s Adrian Wilson speaks with Denver poet, Phil Woods.

Phil Woods has been writing poetry since 1967 – his first poem was scratched on a brick with a bent rusty nail.  Phil has worked in canneries, the Post office, Denver public schools, colleges and prisons. He has studied poetry with Ralph Salisbury, Robert Bly, Gary Snyder, Coleman Barks and Ann Waldman. He received his MFA from the University of Oregon in 1983.  He had the most fun performing poetry with the Free Radical Railroad (a group of 3 poets, Phil, the late Mike Adams of Lafayette and James Taylor III with guitarist, Jim Sheckells). To Understand  is Phil’s 10th book of poetry.  Also, since 2006 Phil has been a writer and actor in the award winning Romero Theater Troupe.
