The Goodies, a reggae band known for their energetic performances and positive vibes, join KGNU DJ Dave McIntyre. They discuss their band name change, how they have gained a loyal following, especially through their creative cover song campaign, and perform a few songs. (Interview date: 2/7/2025)
Dave McIntyre: We have our guests in the studio this morning with us, The Goodies.
Zan: Hello hello.
Dave McIntyre: The Goodies are in the area doing. A tribute to Bob Dylan and his birthday, I suppose you could say.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: Bob Marley.
Dave McIntyre: Bob Marley. I’m sorry.
Zan: We do love Bob Dylan, though.
Dave McIntyre: It’s been a long morning. Tell us about where you’ve been and where you’re gonna be.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: We started off, our very first show of this run was Long Beach at De Piazzas in Long Beach. What was that? That was January 11th.
Dave McIntyre: Oh, so you’ve been on the road a while.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: Yeah. We, that was a hometown show, we live in Orange County, so we went home for a week after that one. And then we went to Winston’s Legendary Reggae Wednesdays, they’ve been doing it a really long time. It was started by our good friend Carlos Culture outta San Diego. He passed away not too long ago. Maybe it’s been three years now. But they keep doing this reggae night. It’s called the Culture Club.
Dave McIntyre: And you’ve got more to play what’s tonight. Of course you’re gonna be at Oskar Blues in Lyons.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: Yeah, we’re very excited about the legendary Oskar Blues. That was the first Oskar Blues, right? The Lyons One?
Dave McIntyre: Yes. It was nice. I’ve been booking bands there since the beginning. 30 some odd years. It’s always fun. It’s always great to have a new band in town. I’ve been looking for a decent reggae band in Boulder and it’s not there. I’m sorry for you who are trying, but I couldn’t find much. So when I got a call that you guys were coming, I thought well, perfect. And you used to live in Boulder for a while.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: Yes, I was. I was in Boulder for a long time. My son is here. And my mom is in Lyons, so we’re very connected to Boulder and Colorado, we come a lot and we love to ski and snowboard.
Dave McIntyre: And you and Zan have been playing together for a while as The Goodies. It used to be Jus Goodie when you lived here. And now it’s The Goodies.
Zan: Yeah. We just changed the band name about a year ago.
Dave McIntyre: Ah, great.
Zan: Everyone started calling us The Goodies and we might as well just change the band name then, it seemed like it made sense. It’s a bold move because we had to start from scratch on a lot of levels. We still have the Jus Goodie brand, his music, and his project and all of that amazing music that he’s made over the years. It’s all out there still. So we created new Spotify and Apple and all the stuff under The Goodies, which is funny because there’s the band or a show, a TV show from the 70s. So some of our music got uploaded to there, and it said it was released in 1972, so it was really funny. So a year ago we switched over to The Goodies and new branding and new logos. We actually did a really fun cover song campaign through all the social media, Instagram and Facebook and YouTube. And we recorded 60 cover songs. All different types of genres. Everything from rap to rock to pop to R&B to blues country and turned ’em into reggae. And we’ve actually gained a lot of fans through that campaign and just people are getting to know us that way. So it’s been really fun on the road ’cause at every single show someone’s come up to us and said, we just saw you on the internet and that’s how we found you.
Dave McIntyre: You’ve got a good presence on the internet. Lots of good stuff. Good graphics and some great tunes. Talk about covered tunes. What’s the four nylons or?
Zan: Oh, the 4 Non Blondes.
Dave McIntyre: 4 Non Blondes.
Zan: That’s a crowd pleaser.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: We do that one every night.
Dave McIntyre: That’s a great tune. Yeah. I really like that.
Zan: I love singing that song. I always say it at shows like I’ve been singing that song since I was probably, I don’t know, 10 or 11 years old, something like that. My dad lived in Mexico and he’d be out, hanging out and doing his thing, and I’d be at the bar singing karaoke as this little girl. And so it was really fun to record that song. We actually have it on our Spotify and all the platforms. But it’s just such a soulful, beautiful song. And the original drummer of 4 Non Blondes reached out to us and said, “you guys did a great job.” That was really cool.
Dave McIntyre: Great lyrics in that song. Let them get away, but they shouldn’t. That’s great stuff. So what are you gonna play for us here this morning?
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: So I think we’re gonna do, it’s our theme song. It’s called Goodie Vibes.
Dave McIntyre: Oh, yes.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: And it’s just a day in the life of us, cruising in Southern California down the one. And it’s a tribute to our dog who died recently. And her voice is in the song, if you listen for it, you can hear her bark.
Zan: And there’s a line that says. “Jazz in the back and Zani riding shotgun.” She just went everywhere with us, so we recorded her little bark, it was like three days before she passed away. She was doing a lot of talking to us before she passed away. So it’s her little bark and every time we play it, it makes me wanna cry. We just miss our little girl. So it’s a tribute to her and our life and our adventure together and having this journey together has been so amazing musically. And Justin, Mr. Goodman here has taught me so much musically and over these past eight years. It’s been such a beautiful journey. Learning harmonies and making music together.
Dave McIntyre: You blend very well together. It’s a good sound. All right. So the Goodie Vibes.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: I wanna say, thanks for having us and thank you, thanks to the front range for representing last night. And I know we’re gonna see a lot of friends and family out there tonight. And we’re just super glad to be here and I’m super glad to be, homecoming back home and we’re spreading the music.
Dave McIntyre: It’s good to have you.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: I am gonna put this mic a little back ’cause I don’t wanna blow it out. My singing voice is a lot louder than my talking voice.
[The Goodies play Goodie Vibes and Landslide]
Dave McIntyre: Very nice.
Zan: Thank you.
Dave McIntyre: I like the way you blend those two songs together. Yeah, that’s pretty good.
Zan: We love Landslide.
Dave McIntyre: There’s a lot of great songs out and they could be put to the reggae beat, as you guys have done. I think that brings in a little bit more of an audience, instead of just one vein. So that’s a great deal.
Zan: We wanna appeal to every type of audience we can think of. Doesn’t matter the demographic, where you come from, what language you speak, whatever it may be.
Dave McIntyre: Music brings us all together. So that’s again, tonight at, Oskar Blues in Lyons seven o’clock show. That’s until 10 and it’s a free show.
Zan: Oh yeah.
Dave McIntyre: Yeah, we’re looking forward to having you guys. And where else do you go from here tonight?
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: We’ll go to Oskar Blues tonight, and then we will, tomorrow we go to Colorado Springs and play Rasta Pasta, which I’ve actually played before. And those guys are like family. They’re friends.
Zan: They had me at pasta. I love pasta.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: We’ve been looking at the menu already.
Zan: And then after that, where are we off to?
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: Then we have a lot, we have some days off then, and we’re headed back towards the west and we’ll have a stop in Utah.
Zan: Powder Mountain. But we’re gonna go to Eldora on Sunday, I hope. So if anybody’s out there.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: Yeah, come find us.
Zan: You can’t miss us with our dreadlocks and we’re a whole thing. Yeah, we’re gonna get some skiing and we’ve got all our gear with us.We were trying to ski in Telluride and we didn’t get a chance to.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: We’re excited to get a couple days on the tour.
Dave McIntyre: Good. You got another song for us.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: Sure.
Zan: What about Redemption Song since we’re here celebrating Bob Marley’s birthday? Goodie here, his huge inspiration in his life has been Jamaica and for me too. And we have totally two different stories about our love for reggae. But he went to Jamaica for the first time when he was 14, and it was an amazing life changing experience for him. And so it’s such an honor to be able to play reggae and to be able to give tribute to Bob Marley and all the amazing Jamaican artists. I mean it’s where reggae is. It’s just beautiful. The evolution of reggae.
Dave McIntyre: It’s a beautiful place. I got to go once myself so far, a friend of mine just moved there and was living in Austin, Texas. A musician, he couldn’t get very far. And so he said, “oh the heck with it,” and sold everything he had and he built himself a house on the hills of Jamaica. He was happy as can be.
Zan: That’s amazing. That sounds like a good plan. I like that plan.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: On that note.
[The Goodies play Redemption Song]
Dave McIntyre: Such a great song. And it will be forever. I think it’s one of those songs that timeless.
Zan: Gives me goosebumps.
Dave McIntyre: Well, thanks so much for coming and joining us at KGNU here and bringing your music. The Goodies again at Lyons tonight, 7 to 1,0 free show. So just come and bring yourself and bring your ears. Bring those goodie vibes. We love the thought, if nothing else, it’s just a terrific thing.
Zan: Our goal is to just practice what we preach and bring a beautiful, loving vibe to every venue that we play in, every city that we travel to. And it’s really, I don’t know, it’s been just so beautiful having people, really showing up for us and we’re like, a surprise. We’re like, they all know us. They love us. And it’s got such a family vibe, such a community, and we’re so grateful for everyone that tunes in and listens to us so
Dave McIntyre: Well, we need positive vibrations right now. That’s for sure.
Zan: Yes, we do.
Dave McIntyre: Any you guys bring it and I’m sure looking forward to the full show. Is it four pieces? Five piece band?
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: Yeah it’s four.
Dave McIntyre: Four? So bass and drums essentially.
Justin “Goodie” Goodman: And guitar and us too.
Dave McIntyre: So come to Lyons tonight. Come see a great show.
Zan: Bring your dancing shoes or just take your shoes off and dance. That’s what I do sometimes.
Dave McIntyre: And if you can’t Lyons, go to Colorado Springs tomorrow night at the Rasta Pasta. Thanks again you guys.
Zan: Thank you so much for having us. See you tonight.
Dave McIntyre: My pleasure.
