Studio Session: Six Foot Joe

Six Foot Joe and the Red Hot Rhinos joined Greg Schultz for KGNU’s Blues Legacy for a live in-studio performance and interview. The band performed a mix of original material and covers, including blues and horn-driven arrangements, and shared their influences ranging from the Blues Brothers to Southside Johnny and Jack Mack and the Heart Attack.

They also discussed the origins of their name, their horn-heavy sound, and upcoming shows, including a June 14 performance at Jerry D’s 2.0 in Dacono. (Air Date 5/8/26)

Transcript:

Greg Schultz:
We’ve got Six Foot Joe and the band, the Red Hot Rhinos, in the studio. They’re ready and enthusiastic to play. They’ll start with a couple songs, then we’ll talk, then more music.

Let’s hear a couple songs from Six Foot Joe.

Greg Schultz:
Great. Could we get introductions of the band?

Six Foot Joe:
On trumpet, Greg Hahn. Also on trumpet, Joseph the Explosive.
Bass guitar, Duke Fellman. Drums, James Townsend.
And my wingman of mayhem on guitar, Reno Smith.

Greg Schultz:
How did you come up with the name Six Foot Joe?

Six Foot Joe:
People say I’m not actually six feet tall. I tell them the band Police aren’t cops and Meat Loaf isn’t meatloaf. It’s just the sound—kind of a “six-foot sound.”

Greg Schultz:
And the Red Hot Rhinos?

Six Foot Joe:
That came after some tequila and a late-night search for a name. Rhinos have horns, and we have horns, so it fit.

Greg Schultz:
What influenced your horn-driven style?

Six Foot Joe:
Southside Johnny, Jack Mack and the Heart Attack, and of course the Blues Brothers. I saw those bands live at Rainbow Music Hall in Denver.

“Money Can’t Buy Me Love” (Beatles cover)

Greg Schultz:
That was great. Do you have another tune?

Six Foot Joe:
Yeah, “Afternoon Drinkin’.”

“Afternoon Drinkin’”

Greg Schultz:
Great set. One more tune?

Six Foot Joe:
We’ll finish with “Mojo.”

“Mojo Working” (Muddy Waters cover)

Greg Schultz:
Thank you, Six Foot Joe and the Red Hot Rhinos. Any upcoming shows?

Six Foot Joe:
We’re playing Sunday, June 14th at Jerry D’s 2.0 in Dacono, from 2 to 6 PM. It’s an afternoon show—come out and enjoy it.

We also have a Facebook page, a website, and some videos on YouTube.

Greg Schultz:
Thanks for coming in.

Six Foot Joe:
Our pleasure.
