Boulder singer-songwriter Logan Proffitt joined Iris Berkeley live in KGNU’s Red Studio for an intimate in-studio set, performing originals including his debut single “Little Car.” The former Highlines guitarist shared about stepping into solo work, crafting a more stripped-down sound, and working on an upcoming EP—plus hopes of playing the Fox solo one day.

I’m Iris Berkeley, and I’ve got a special guest in the studio. I’ve been talking this up for the last hour, and I’m joined now by Logan Proffitt, Boulder-based singer-songwriter. We’re going to have a little chat, but first—do you want to give us a taste and play something for us?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
Yeah, of course. Thanks for having me.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
Sounds great. What do we have up first?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
This first one’s called “Little Car.” I put it out about a month ago.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
Amazing. Take it away.

Iris Berkeley (Host):
Cool. Thank you. We’ve got Logan Proffitt here in KGNU’s Red Studio for a beautiful impromptu performance on the Afternoon Sound Alternative. That was gorgeous. That was “Little Car,” your first official single, right?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
Yep. First official single.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
Tell me about that one.
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
I started focusing on my own writing this summer, and that was maybe the third or fourth song I wrote. It was inspired by a few mountain drives.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
And that’s after a couple of years as lead guitar with The Highlines.
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
Yep. We’ve been a band for about three years now.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
You met as CU students, right?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
Yep.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
Did you know you were going to be in a band in school?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
No. They found me on Instagram until I agreed to join the band—and that was that.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
I love that. So you’re all branching out and doing different things. What’s going on with the band right now?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
We spent the summer in our singer’s basement recording our debut album. It’s called Silhouettes, if you want to check it out. We released it a few months ago, and we’re on a bit of a break at the moment. Some people are out of state doing other things.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
That gives you a chance to explore your solo work.
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
Exactly.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
This feels like a more chill vibe for you. Tell me about those two sides of your personality.
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
It’s awesome because I get to rock out with the band and play loud music. But I also love artists like Gregory Alan Isakov and John Mayer. I get to play big, energetic shows with the band and then play quieter, more intimate stuff on my own.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
You can definitely hear some John Mayer influence. And you’re playing at the Trident on Friday, right?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
Yes. I’m part of the songwriter session this Friday.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
Do you know what time it starts?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):

Thanks for having me. This has been a lot of fun.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
Tell me about those last two songs. I’m always curious about the songwriting process—how something goes from an idea in your head to what we just heard.
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
It’s kind of weird. I’ll be playing around and a riff pops out of nowhere. Then a vocal melody follows. Sometimes you write a riff and it takes two weeks to find the melody. The second song I played came together in one night, and then I worked on the lyrics for a week or two.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
How is that different from working with your bandmates?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
It’s a lot different—and harder—for me to do solo. When you’ve got guys as talented as the ones in my band, someone brings in a riff and someone else builds on it. It can write itself. With solo stuff, you’re responsible for the whole thing.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
Anything you want to share about those two songs?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
There’s a good chance that last one will be on my EP.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
The EP is in the works—tell me about that.
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
We’re still early in the process. I’m figuring out the direction and arranging songs, but I’ll probably be going into the studio in the next month or two.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
Will that be local?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
Yes. I recorded my last single at Colorado Sound Studios.
Iris Berkeley (Host):

And you’re at the Trident on Friday. You’ve also got other shows coming up this spring, right?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
Yes. I’m playing at St. Vrain Cidery on the 28th of this month, and then at Boozy Bruce in Nederland in May.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
That gives us something to look forward to. Here’s the big question: when we have you back in five years, where do you hope to be?
Logan Proffitt (Musician):
I’d love to have a full album out within the next year or so. I’d also love to play the Fox solo. We’ve had a ton of fun playing there with The Highlines. Beyond that, I’m along for the ride. I hope we can put out more Highlines music, too.
Iris Berkeley (Host):
