Studio Session: Buudrow

Denver musician Buudrow joined KGNU’s Doug Gertner for a studio session. Buudrow discussed his musical journey, and how he uses music as a way to preserve optimism through struggle. He played a few songs and previewed his performance at Swallow Hill (Interview date: 11/4/2024)

Doug Gertner: We’re in the Denver studio with Buudrow. He’s a local artist joining us now for a few tunes to introduce himself, as well as a show coming up at Swallow Hill.

Buudrow: Thanks for having me. I’m Buudrow and this song is called “Fly My Love”. It’s about when you’re arguing with somebody that you love and you just get to that point where you’re past the argument and you want to get into loving each other again.

Doug Gertner: That’s Buudrow live in the KGNU Denver Studio. What’s that one called?

Buudrow: That’s called “Fly My Love”.

Doug Gertner: All right, thank you. I’ve seen you play, opening for Megan Burtt a while back. But for those who may not be familiar, what’s the history, the origin story of this project? Where’s your name come from?

Buudrow: My stage name was an old nickname that my dad used to call me. My real name is a little bit of a mouthful so I needed something to go on stage. It felt like it was close to my heart. I loved the way it sounded when people called me Buudrow, and so it felt like the perfect name to call myself.

Doug Gertner: We’ll call you Buudrow today. The music that you bring us today has a bit of a backstory. I’m wondering if you want to go there and just tell folks how it came to be that you’re playing music around town and beyond.

Buudrow: I always was a creative person, and I always wrote songs for fun. I would say the thing that defines my music is this sort of optimism through struggle. I lost my sister when I was about 24, seven years ago now. That was the thing that spurred me to say, okay, I love writing songs and it’s time to do it for real. I decided to really write and record and take it seriously.

Doug Gertner: That makes sense. I’m sorry for your loss, and I’m glad that music has been one of the ways to focus the pain and bring out music. I’ve noticed you’ve been dropping a lot of singles recently, and I’m wondering what’s in the pipeline for Buudrow as far as recordings? You got an EP or an LP in the works? Or what can we expect moving forward?

Buudrow: Yeah, there’s quite a bit on the way. I’ve been recording my first album, which has 15 tunes on it. It was a bit of a bigger project than I expected.

Doug Gertner: Yeah. Definitely an LP.

Buudrow: We’ll see it early next year. We’ll see the rest of it. And I’ve already started recording my second studio album and hopefully some of that will come out next year too.

Doug Gertner: All right. 2025 will be a big year for Buudrow. We’re going to talk about November 15th, 2024 in a minute. That’s when you’re playing over at Swallow Hill, but since this is a music show, let’s get another tune in.

Buudrow: Okay, sweet. This song’s called “Go And Dance”.

Doug Gertner: Buudrow playing live in studio on KGNU. One called “Go And Dance”. Folks may be doing that. I wanted to ask you about the upcoming show at Swallow Hill with Cody Qualls. It’s Friday, November 15th. What do you have in mind? What can folks expect?

Buudrow: Yeah, it’s going to be a great show. There’s going to be two full sets. Cody Qualls is going to play a full set before us. And then I’m going to go on stage with a full band. We’re going to do a really nice show in the Tuft Theater. at Swallow Hill. So I’m really excited to be part of it.

Doug Gertner: Named after the great Harry Tuft. You’ll do it proud. A couple of fellow singer songwriters, Buudrow along with Cody Qualls, Friday, November 15th. Swallow Hill Music is where you can get more information and tickets. Couple of singer songwriters bringing it on a Friday night. What else should folks be aware of? What should folks keep an eye out for? What’s in the cards for Buudrow? You said maybe two albums next year?

Buudrow: I’ve got a ton of music that I want to put out all next year. I think the best way to keep up to date with that is to follow me on socials. I go by Buudrow Music on Instagram.

Doug Gertner: I’ve got one other place, Buudrow.com, and you’re talking Instagram and Facebook in particular.

Buudrow: Yeah. Basically, you search Buudrow, you’ll find me.

Doug Gertner: Ah, thanks to a nickname that came your way as a kid that you’re preserving to this day. Glad to have you here, Rob, and if we can go out with a tune, tell us what it is.

Buudrow: Yeah, this is a song that I just wrote called “Loving Sounds” and I’m pretty excited about it.

Doug Gertner: That’s Buudrow. Live at KGNU. Catch Buudrow along with Cody Qualls on the 15th, Friday night at Swallow Hill in the Tuft Theater. Thanks for being here.
