Local Gold: Ingrid Avison

Ingrid Avison and Jeff Dean joined KGNU’s Meredith Carson in the studio for a live performance. Ingrid discussed her upcoming EP release dedicated to her late father. She also mentioned an upcoming KGNU Presents show on October 11th at the Chautauqua Community House, where she will open for Reed Foehl (Interview date: 9/20/2024)

Meredith Carson: You’re listening to KGNU. I am Meredith Carson and we are delighted to welcome Ingrid Avison and Jeff Dean to the studios, here to play live with us.

Ingrid, you are Colorado based. Did you grow up in Colorado or move here?

Ingrid Avison: I didn’t. I grew up in California, but I’ve been living between Boulder and Nederland in the foothill mountains for the past couple of years.

Meredith Carson: I read somewhere, with your dog Olive.

Ingrid Avison: With my dog Olive, yeah.

Meredith Carson: How come Olive didn’t get to come this morning?

Ingrid Avison: Oh my God, I didn’t know she could. I would absolutely bring her next time.

Meredith Carson: Sign her up. Absolutely.

Ingrid Avison: She’ll love it. She’s very friendly.

Meredith Carson: Good. And you have a brand new release coming out. I’m holding this in my hand. So this is, you say, dedicated to Patrick Avison, and may these songs forever and always be a portal for his time traveling soul. That is such a lovely dedication. Just beautiful.

Ingrid Avison: Yeah, it’s my dad.

Meredith Carson: Yeah. I figured, having read a few things.

Ingrid Avison: Yeah, the last name.

Meredith Carson: Well, it could have been a brother. Just, for the folks out there. That’s a beautiful dedication for a lovely release. And this release date is today, tomorrow?

Ingrid Avison: The release show is actually tomorrow, Saturday, September 21st. It’s at Rootss Music Project.

Meredith Carson: Oh, cool.

Ingrid Avison: The release will be in the next few weeks. There’s a couple of behind the scenes things happening before the actual date is set.

Meredith Carson: Not unprecedented.

Ingrid Avison: Not unprecedented! This is how music goes sometimes, but I’ll post on my socials and all that, so if folks want to find out, they can follow me @IngridAvison.

Meredith Carson: That is a wonderful thing. Let’s just hear what you want to play this morning. I asked them to play three songs. I don’t know if these are all going to be from the new thing or what you’re going to do,

Ingrid Avison: The first one is on the EP. This is actually a huge impetus that sort of started the whole creative project. So I’m really excited to play this one. This one’s “Time Traveling Cowboy”.

Meredith Carson: Love it already. Ingrid Avison live in the KGNU studios. That’s a gorgeous tune.

Ingrid Avison: Thank you so much.

Meredith Carson: So fabulous.

Ingrid Avison: Happy to get to play it here.

Meredith Carson: So happy to have you in. We are going to give away a couple pairs of tickets for Ingrid’s concert at Chautauqua. So talk about that one for a second also. So tomorrow is the release concert at Roots Music Project. What time?

Ingrid Avison: It’s doors at six, show at seven.

Meredith Carson: And then on the 11th of October, KGNU’s presenting your concert at, with Reed Foehl, another great friend of KGNU. We love Reed.

Ingrid Avison: I’m so excited to open for him. It’s such a privilege.

Meredith Carson: Oh, he’s just great. So that’ll be up at the Chautauqua Community House.

Ingrid Avison: Yeah. I’m super excited. That show starts at eight. It’ll be me and Jeff opening up and then Reed. It’s going to be a great show. And if you haven’t been to the Chautauqua Community House, it’s a really sweet, cozy, historic spot. It’s a really good setting.

Meredith Carson: Like being in somebody’s living room. Only with nice chairs and good sound.

Ingrid Avison: Yeah. And somehow it feels like you’re time traveling back to 1850. It’s really cool.

Meredith Carson: Great. We can’t wait for that again. That’s October 11th. Tomorrow night is the EP release concert at Roots Music Project at seven. Could we have another couple of tunes?

Ingrid Avison: Oh my God. I would just love to.

Meredith Carson: Ingrid Avison live in the KGNU studios. What’s the title of that one?

Ingrid Avison: That one’s “Clarity”!

Meredith Carson: And that one is also on the new EP. Again, we’re going to give away a pair of tickets after this next and final live cut.

Ingrid Avison: Thank you so much for having us, Meredith.

Meredith Carson: Oh, it is my pleasure.

Ingrid Avison: This song is not on the EP. I wrote it after the EP was completed. It also probably would be a weird vibe, to be honest, to throw this one in. You’ll find out. But I do dedicate this one to the wonderful Planned Parenthood.

Meredith Carson: The fabulous Ingrid Avison on KGNU. I like a woman who just says what she thinks.

Ingrid Avison: Sometimes you just have to write songs that are facts.

Meredith Carson: Exactly. Irrefutable fact. So much fun to have you this morning.

Ingrid Avison: It was such a blast.

Meredith Carson: And Jeff, thanks so much for coming as well. Give us a tiny bit of information about really one of the most beautiful upright basses I’ve ever seen. It’s so gorgeous.

Jeff Dean: This is a bass I got from a luthier in Denver, Bob Ross. I sset it up real nice and all you have to do is play a single note.

Meredith Carson: It’s so resonant, and it’s so beautiful. All right, my friends, thank you so much for coming.
