Interview: Pink Fuzz

Pink Fuzz members John and Lulu Demitro stopped by Sound Lab to talk with DJ Iris Berkeley about their long-awaited new album Resolution, a project written through the upheaval of the pandemic and the many life changes that followed. The sibling duo reflected on years of touring—including recent runs with The Sword—life on the road, and the excitement of finally bringing their album home to Denver for a headlining release show at the Bluebird Theater. They discussed the creative process behind Resolution, hinted at heavier new material in the works, and highlighted the local bands joining them for the celebration. The interview captures the energy, honesty, and evolution of Pink Fuzz as they continue building momentum into the new year. (November 18, 2025).

DJ Iris Berkeley: I have got John Demitro and Lulu Demitro here from Ping Fuzz in the studio right now, and I got all sorts of questions about that record. But first off, it’s just happy, real happy that you can make it in tonight.

John Demitro:  Thank you for having us. Thank you so much for having us.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Absolute joy. So brand new record, brand new for us. Not brand new, new for you. It’s funny ’cause we’re sitting here in the studio and it was just like watching somebody take in music that they know real well. That I’ve heard like three times. What’s that like? What’s that like?

Lulu Demitro: I mean it’s great. We we’re really proud of our album. I think. I mean we were telling you before we went live, we recorded this album, what, two years ago? Yeah, two and a half years ago. And so we’ve. We know these and we wrote these songs. Some of these songs we wrote, I don’t know, four or five years ago. Right. So it’s been. They’ve been in the rotation for us for quite a while. Right. So it is, I mean, one thing that’s great about it is you know, playing live. A lot of people when we play live, especially like out on tour or whatever, it’s the first time they’re hearing it, so Right. That kind of reinvigorates the song for us. But yeah, we’re real proud of the album, so it’s not, it’s not a pain to listen to by any means.

DJ Iris Berkeley: And you’re gonna take this to the Bluebird on Saturday?

John Demitro: Yeah.

Lulu Demitro: We’re excited to be back, back home. We haven’t played a headlining show in Denver in over a year. Wow. And because you’ve been busy, you’ve been everywhere. Yeah, we’ve been busy. I mean, we played, we played Denver a couple times this year. But yeah, we haven’t headlined a show and it’s gonna be just really nice to have this album out. And we have vinyl. Oh, nice. We’re gonna see our friends, play with our friends. It’s gonna be really fun.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Like a homecoming party. Yeah, exactly. Totally. And John, you’re like back in town ’cause you said you’re in California now?

John Demitro: Yeah, part-time. We. Me and my girlfriend kind of got a spot out there actually, right by Pap and Harriet’s. The world famous. Not too far away from there. All right. And kind of just going back and forth and that’s now a home base for Pink Fuzz too, when we go out that way. Right. But yeah, it’s always fun to be back in Denver and Boulder.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Right. And you went on the road like for forever. ‘Cause like August you were out with The Sword on their Warf Riders Tour. God, what was that like?

Lulu Demitro: Oh, it was amazing. Yeah. We were so. Felt so lucky to be there with them and to be out with Rick Shaw, Billys Burger Patrol too. But we did the West Coast with them in August and we did their big return dates with them in Texas in April. Wow. And then recently and for most of October we were out with them as well through the Midwest. And so yeah, we’ve been gone. So it is nice to be, it really is nice to be home.

DJ Iris Berkeley: The whole living out of a bus in the Midwest.

Lulu Demitro: Totally.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Did you like find new places where you’re like, hey, this is my favorite city now, you’re like, Lawrence, Kansas?

John Demitro: Lawrence is great. We always tore out s— Where’d you play? Where’d you play in Lawrence?

We did the Granada with The Sword because obviously they’re a big band, but we go out there all the time and play Replay. We’ve done Bottleneck. Bottleneck. Yeah. It’s such a cool spot.

Lulu Demitro: We do actually really love Lords, so yeah. Awesome. We do love Lawrence, Kansas.

DJ Iris Berkeley: That’s awesome. No, I lived there for a while. So yeah, you know, Lawrence is a cool town. But yeah, I mean, I think on this tour especially we didn’t have a lot of time to do anything. I mean, as it is with most tour. But you know, you get to your venue at like three or four, load in, sound check. You have maybe a little bit of time to set up and relax and change or take a really quick shower and then play the show. And then you’re at the show for the rest of the night and then you get back to your hotel at like 3:00 AM and then you have to wake up at like 8:00 AM, 7:00 AM and drive six hours and do the whole thing again.

So we didn’t see a lot of too many places. We did have a day off in Lawrence, which was really nice ’cause we love hanging out in Lawrence, and we had a day off in Minneapolis before we played.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Not at all good record stores.

John Demitro: But the venues were really cool. To go to, I mean, these are like bucket list venues. We played First Avenue in Minneapolis. All right. Which where they shot Purple Rain. Yeah. House of Blues Chicago. The Rave in Milwaukee. Yeah. It was amazing.

Lulu Demitro: So we were mostly spending our time at the venue, and then just in our van of course, but the venues were amazing.

DJ Iris Berkeley: That’s so real. And at least you’re used to being in the same space together ’cause you’re brother and sister.

Lulu Demitro: Totally. Yeah. No, we’re used to it. We’ve put our time in as brother and sister.

DJ Iris Berkeley: So how does that work? How do you form a band? Like my sister is a bass player and we’d kill each other.

Lulu Demitro: Yeah. I mean. I don’t know. John and I, we’ve been playing in bands together since we were like, what, 14 is when? 14, 13, 4. I mean, we’ve always been teenagers. We’ve always written music together. You know, when we were younger and then John started playing in bands. And we both grew up playing classical piano and John played drums and bass and eventually taught me how to play bass. But when we were teenagers, John was like, we should start a band. Like, think about how easy it’ll be for us to practice ’cause we’re both right here. That’s true. So yeah.

So John was like, we’re starting a band and you’re playing keyboard and you’re gonna learn how to play bass and I’m gonna learn how to play guitar. And so we just did that. I think it’s been many years since then and we’ve had to learn how to work with each other and keep it civil, but you know. Have a working relationship and a sibling relationship. But yeah, it’s pretty great so far. It’s working well for us at least.

DJ Iris Berkeley: That’s awesome. Yeah. Who else is gonna be on stage with you on Saturday?

Lulu Demitro: We have a drummer, his name is Will Travis.

John Demitro: Shout out to Will.

Lulu Demitro: And he will be there as well. Alright. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Otherwise it’s gonna be a real mellow show.

John Demitro: Super mellow.

DJ Iris Berkeley: So talk to me about the new record. You’ve been sitting on these songs for a while and you’ve been touring ’em for a while, but you’re like, why now? And now that you look at it, you know, I listen to the record and I hear a thing that’s very different from what you hear. So when you see all of these together on a piece of vinyl with some art in the cover, what does that feel like?

John Demitro: It feels great. I mean, like we were talking about earlier, a lot of these songs we started writing around COVID when there was nothing to do.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Oh God. How was COVID for y’all?

John Demitro: It sucked at first, and then we really stayed really busy through COVID actually. We did videos and tried to practice all the time.

Lulu Demitro: We were just like this practice remotely. Right.

John Demitro: And then when it was okay to get together, we all got together and did stuff. So I feel like there was a month where we didn’t do stuff and then we really tried to stay busy and make videos and do stuff.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Right. Here’s your chance. And make an album.

John Demitro: So yeah.

DJ Iris Berkeley: So like the energy on the album, when you have it all in that package together, how would you describe that as a unified record?

Lulu Demitro: I feel like it’s pretty angsty for us as a record, as a COVID record. We wrote most of the songs coming out of COVID or in COVID. And then I don’t know, just a lot of big life for everyone. Over the last, like, I don’t know when COVID started, five years, and then now that this album’s out. Yeah, it’s been five years.

So it’s a lot of changes and life changes for us as a band. And so I think that it really holds all of those things — angst and I guess resolution as well.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Appropriate name.

Lulu Demitro: Yeah, exactly.

DJ Iris Berkeley: So okay, so this is your angst record. Are you working on new? So what is the next one gonna be like your YA rock? No, please. Totally.

Lulu Demitro: Yep.

DJ Iris Berkeley: What are you working on now?

Lulu Demitro: We’ve got a lot of new stuff cooking. We’ve had to really take our time getting ready to write new things. Because we’ve had so many other things to prepare for, just like getting ready to go on tour and getting ready to release this album.

John Demitro: And also staying busy. And just touring before this big Sword tour. We like to go out and tour as much as possible and make money and try to be busy and not just do two local shows a year.

Lulu Demitro: Really trying to go do it. Yeah. So we’ve got new music cooking. I guess maybe it’s a little less angst, less angsty, but it’s representative of where we are now, which is definitely a much different place than where we started with this album.

John Demitro: Or when the band started too. Oh, yeah.

Lulu Demitro: Even when the band started.

John Demitro: I’d say a lot of the stuff I’ve been writing is a lot heavier than this previous album.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Yeah. All right. All right. You gonna bring any of that out on Saturday? Because this is your album release, but you’re already thinking about your next stuff.

John Demitro: I don’t know. I think we’re— yeah, I probably— yeah. You’ll show up to see. I never know.

DJ Iris Berkeley: You’ll just have to see. So folks who do show up, what do you want them to know? What can they expect?

Lulu Demitro: It’s gonna be a great night. So show up early. The bands that are playing with us, Blank Slate and then a band called Bitch Flower. Both fem fronted, amazing energy, high energy, and great songwriting. They’re gonna be awesome. So show up early for them.

And then from us, we’re gonna play through our whole album, which we don’t normally do. Not straight through, not in order, but we are going to be playing every song on the album, which, like I said, we don’t do normally. And then some older stuff and some other surprises as well.

And yeah, I think for our Denver fans that— maybe they saw us play with The Sword. We played with The Sword in Denver. Or we played Levitt Pavilion. That was for Inverse. Was that the last—

DJ Iris Berkeley: Was that the last time you were here?

Lulu Demitro: That was the last time we played Denver. And it was just a real short little set. So I think for our Denver fans, they can just expect to see a high energy, fun show.

DJ Iris Berkeley: I mean, and you’ve got folks who’ve known you since the beginning who are probably gonna be here.

Lulu Demitro: Totally. We’re lucky. We’re excited to see them. Lucky we have fans that are— that’s so rad.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Yeah. You’ve been doing this for a long time, your home base. And for people who are just tuning in now and they’re like, I don’t know about this band, but I just heard them and I like them. Where can folks learn more about you?

John Demitro: All the socials. Instagram, we have a website, Spotify. I don’t know all the—

DJ Iris Berkeley: Hit me with your Instagram handle.

John Demitro: It’s @PinkFuzzBand.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Good place to start. Yeah, that’s totally— that’s a good place to— amazing. Well, you came all the way down here on a Tuesday night. I wanna definitely give folks one more song, but is there anything that I forgot to ask you that you wanna share with the KGN universe as we like to call ourselves?

John Demitro: Thank you for having us. We’re excited to be here. We’re gonna be really busy in the new year. We have lots of fun stuff to announce coming up. All right. Yeah. As far as touring.

Lulu Demitro: So yeah, just keep an eye out, I guess, and—

John Demitro: Oh, and get your tickets to the Bluebird too. ‘Cause it sold out last time. We headlined on the coldest day of the year in 2024.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Yeah. At least it’s probably— it’s probably not gonna— it’s gonna be warm. Yeah. It’s probably not gonna snow.

Lulu Demitro: Fingers crossed. Fingers crossed. Well, I don’t know. I’d like some snow.

DJ Iris Berkeley: Yeah. So “Cycles.” Can we end with “Cycles”?

Lulu Demitro: Yeah, totally.

DJ Iris Berkeley: You would tell me anything about the song?

John Demitro: Well, I feel like it’s about this album— just going through cycles in life and yeah. It’s just a vibe.

Lulu Demitro: A lot of emotional processing through all these songs.

DJ Iris Berkeley: That’s what music’s there for.

Lulu Demitro: Exactly.

John Demitro: For sure.

DJ Iris Berkeley: All right. It has been an absolute pleasure to have you guys come and hang out in the studio here in Boulder. I’ve just been speaking with John DeMiro and Lulu DeMiro of Pink Fuzz. They’re gonna be at the Bluebird in Denver this Saturday, the 22nd in advance of their album release. They’re gonna play the whole thing, which is gonna be rad. New record’s called Resolution. We got one more song for you before we head out. It is “Cycles.” It’s Sound Lab. It’s community radio.
