DJ: The Groove Thief
What shows do you host on KGNU and how long have you been with the station?
I host Reggae Transfusion (2nd & 5th Wednesdays) and Dub Palace (4th Sundays) as my regular shows, and through some Music Director scheduling sorcery I am blessed to host Reggae Bloodlines every other month or so! I’m also a more recent member of the African Roots collective, and it’s been quite fun to sub on Musica Mundi when that opportunity has arisen.
I’ve been on air with the station since January 2017. I joined KGNU as soon as I could, after moving back to Colorado from overseas.
Who is your favorite artist and/or album of all time?
I don’t exactly love this question haha! There’s just too much musical greatness, and (in my humble opinion) it’s the responsibility of DJs to seek that out. I’m not settling for a 2025 favorite, I’m looking for my 2036 jams.
However, I do want to shout out a band that strongly impacted my passion for reggae, Natty Nation. Based out of Madison, WI, they were the first band I ever saw that played reggae music.
What is your Zodiac sign and what (if anything) does it say about you?
I was born in late June. I just think that says my parents had an enjoyable late September!
If you could have any musician’s record collection, whose would it be?
I’m tempted by Nightmares on Wax, DJ Vadim, David Rodigan, and Lloyd Barnes (aka Bullwackie), amongst others, but I’ll go in a deeper direction: Basic Channel (aka Rhythm & Sound). Their foundational music sits at the crossroads of dub and techno, and they’ve worked with some amazing vocal talent, including Cornell Campbell, Jennifer Lara, The Love Joys, Sugar Minott, and Tikiman. They’ve run several influential record labels, and I’m confident their record collection is equally impressive.
What song do you never get tired of playing on air?
“United Immigrants” by The Black Eagles.
What is something most people would be surprised to learn about you?
I dropped out of cooking school… then later taught cooking classes to children.
