A Boulder man has died following a late-night fire at a senior living complex on Baseline Road. Fire Rescue crews arrived just before midnight Sunday and discovered the victim inside a single unit.

Denver City Council Talk Cold Shelter Funding Next Week

The Denver City Council has postponed a vote on nearly half a million dollars in funding intended to provide overflow hotel rooms for the city’s unhoused population during winter months. Council member Shontel Lewis requested the delay, stating she needs more time to review exactly how the funds are allocated.

The proposed $450,000 contract expansion with US Motels North, LLC would serve as a safety net when city-owned emergency shelters reach capacity. Housing officials expect demand for cold-weather shelter to increase by 15% to 20% this season, and they argue the extra funding is vital to ensure no one is turned away during a freeze.

Rather than leasing entire buildings, the city would use a voucher system to secure hotel rooms and ballroom space on an as-needed basis. The resolution is scheduled to return to the City Council for further consideration next Monday, Jan 12.

Mission Ballroom Plaza Approved for Public Alcohol Consumption

Denver City Council has approved the city’s first-ever entertainment district, allowing patrons to carry alcoholic drinks outdoors within the plaza in front of the Mission Ballroom. This marks the first successful application of a common consumption area since Denver paved the way for the districts back in 2019.

According to the Denver Post, the 14-acre site will allow customers from nearby spots to wander the plaza with their beverages. While the Mission Ballroom itself is excluded from the program, developers plan to activate the space with yard games, art events, and community programming to draw in crowds.

City officials noted that while other Colorado cities like Fort Collins and Aurora have similar areas, Denver’s requirements remain strict, requiring at least 20,000 square feet of licensed premises to qualify. The council also voted to make the program permanent, hoping this first success will inspire more applications across the city.

Trump Reportedly Freezes CO Childcare Funding

The Trump administration has reportedly frozen more than $10 billion in federal funds designated for child care and social services in five Democratic-led states, including Colorado. Federal health officials cite “widespread fraud” as the reason for the move, though they have not provided any specific allegations regarding Colorado’s programs.

The freeze impacts programs like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and child care subsidies, which support roughly 47,000 Colorado children living in poverty. State officials warn that the loss of over $300 million could leave parents unable to work or afford basic necessities like diapers.

Governor Jared Polis’ office says they have not yet received formal notice of the freeze and are currently assessing how to support families if the funds remain blocked. Colorado lawmakers may be forced to tap into emergency reserve funds to keep the state’s safety net from collapsing.
