Knit and Purl – knitting for a cause in Longmont

With winter weather upon us and temperatures dropping, it’s time to bundle up in warm clothes, but not everyone has them. A group of women in Longmont has been meeting every Wednesday for the last few years to knit sweaters and hats for those who need them. KGNU’s Yukari Miyamae visited the Knit and Pearl group and spoke with the founder Becky Williamson.

Williamson started the knitting group called Knit and Perl at the Longmont Senior Center with 6 members in 1999 after she retired from Longmont Public Library. Since then, the group had grown and women (and some men) of all ages gather together on a weekly basis to knit items that are donated.

Every Wednesday morning from 9 AM to 11AM, the group gathers and knits and purls . They have donated thousands of baby hats, kid’s sweaters, blankets and scarves to local organizations such as Head Start, the Homeless Shelter, the Veteran’s Hospital and the New Born Ward  every year.

“We feel that we are giving to projects and people but we all feel that we benefit the most. We enjoy the fellowship and meeting new people. We have various backgrounds of people that come and that is so interesting. We also feel thatm especially for seniors, that you’re making a sweater for a little kid that you don’t even know and you’re making him happy, and that makes you feel really good…really really good.”

Donations of wool and knitting supplies can be left at the Longmont Senior Center or brought in on a Wednesday morning between 9 and 11am.
