On Friday, April 19th, Swallow Hill Music will host two powerful performers, both Americana troubadours known for their bluesy guitar work and captivating songwriting.
Ray Bonneville has been called “a poet of the demimonde” with a style that sometimes draws comparisons to JJ Cale and Daniel Lanois. His music is blues-influenced, New Orleans-inspired, and has earned him the apt description of “song and groove man.” His original songs are gritty narratives inspired by a lifetime of hard-won knowledge set against his steely, soulful guitar and harmonica playing, accented by stirring foot percussion. He is a winner and three-time nominee of Canada’s coveted Juno Award, and also a winner of the International Blues Challenge Award. Though he is a solo artist, Bonneville has collaborated with many Americana/Roots greats, having played on albums by Mary Gauthier, Gurf Morlix, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and Eliza Gilkyson to name a few. He also shares songwriting credits with, among others, Tim O’Brien, Phil Roy, and Gurf Morlix. Ray latest album, “On the Blind Side,” was released in October of 2023.
Seth Walker is often cited as one of the most prolific contemporary Americana artists on the scene today. He’s a multi-dimensional talent who combines a gift for melody and lyric alongside a rich, Gospel-drenched, Southern-inflected voice, He’s released ten albums, broken into the Top 20 of the Americana Radio Charts, reached No. 2 on the Billboard Blues Album Chart and received praise from NPR, American Songwriter, No Depression and Relix, among others. With a blues man’s respect for roots and tradition, coupled with an appreciation for—and successful melding of—contemporary songwriting, Walker incorporates a range of styles to produce his own dynamic sound. His latest studio album, I Hope I Know, produced by Jano Rix of The Wood Brothers, and a string of singles, including “We Got This,” “Spirits Moving” and a cover of Van Morrison’s classic “Warm Love” further build upon this reputation.
The show starts at 8 pm at Daniels Hall at 71 E. Yale St. in Denver. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 day of show, and can be purchased online at www.swallowhillmusic.org Bonneville and Walker will each play a set, as well as perform together. Doors are at 7 pm.
