Music is always telling stories, be it from the context in which it was composed, the text telling a particular story, or something more metaphorical. This concert invites you on a journey through a spectrum of pieces from different eras and cultures, each telling their unique stories of love, nature, mental health, and family.
Program highlights:
* Stories of War: We delve into the poignant realities of war as depicted through Maurice Ravel’s enchanting melodies in Nicolette and Trois Beaux Oiseaux du Paradis.
* Stories of Love: We explore the complexities of affection through Gustav Holst’s achingly beautiful I Love My Love.
* Stories of Nature: We journey into the serene connection between human emotions and the natural world, brought to life by Fanny Hensel’s Schöne Fremde and Mari Esabel Valverde’s A Green Voice.
* Stories of Self: We delve into self-discovery and personal growth, beautifully portrayed in contemporary composer Laura Mvula’s Sing to the Moon and Florence Price’s Wander-thirst.
* Stories for Families: We celebrate familial bonds and shared experiences with whimsical pieces such as Teddy Bears’ Picnic and Josquin’s El Grillo, and bring the concert to a close with Stephen Sondheim’s profound Children Will Listen from Into the Woods.
