Big Dopes and Phoebe Nix at The Velvet Elk Lounge

September 21, 2023 @ 9:00 pm - 11:00 pm MDT

$4 – $15

Big Dopes recalls the loose, lighthearted feel of 90s alternative and indie pop, with influences somewhere between Paul Simon, Jonathan Richman, and Pavement. Lead songwriter Eddie Schmid uses a playful, conversational baritone to sing through neuroses and inner dialogues, touching on long-distance relationships, being a houseguest, and gratitude for friends named Tom. In August 2021 the band made waves for its energetic live show at Denver’s Underground Music Showcase festival. That November the Dopes released their sophomore album, Destination Wedding, produced by Mark Anderson (Paper Bird, The Still Tide). The group completed its first tour behind the new LP, culminating in a slot opening for Tokyo Police Club at Denver’s famed Bluebird Theater and later for Colorado favorites Kiltro and Wildermiss at the Gothic Theatre. The band continued touring behind the album in April 2022. In November 2022, they teamed up with Little Trips to release a psychedelic remix of their song “Take You Anywhere.”

Phoebe Nix is the group fronted by multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Christopher Robert Clauss. Growing up between Colorado and New Jersey, Christopher launched Phoebe in 2014 in the vibrant Asbury Park music scene of coastal NJ. After being nominated for top new artist by the Asbury Music Awards, Christopher packed his dreams and life into his car and drove them back out to Boulder. Recently, Phoebe Nix has re emerged with a whole new consisting of some of the finest musicians in the front range. The group features Lucas Cosby on keyboards and synthesizers, Ari Melinger-Cohen on electric bass, and Quinton Nespor on the drum kit, and the occasional horn section. Phoebe Nix blends funk and jazz sensibilities with classic songwriting, and high points of wild improvisation. With some parts indie rock, some parts jazz pop, Nix brings an energetic and captivating performance. In a short time since the new year, this incarnation of Phoebe Nix has gone from favorite local cafe’s like the trident to the Fox Theater, and will continue to push forward and share the music with a growing fan base. Look for a full-length album dropping in October, and some singles coming soon!

Bar opens at 5 PM and happy hour from open to 7 PM. (21+) The Velvet Elk Lounge does not allow minors – No Exceptions.
