Come dance the night away to the sweet sounds of music from Zimbabwe: Kutandara will take us on a deep marimba journey which fuses ancient African music traditions with indie-pop, rock, jazz, gospel, classical, and world folk influences. Their exuberant and hi-energy polyrhythmic performances are innovative and deeply-rooted at the same time. Kutandara means to come together and have a good time, which is the group’s purpose as they exchange energy of music and movement with their audiences. Experience the captivating rhythms and soul-stirring melodies of Zimbabwean Mbira music. Rooted in the rich cultural traditions of Zimbabwe, Mbira music features the enchanting sounds of thumb pianos, creating a hypnotic and entrancing sonic landscape. Join us for an unforgettable jam from some of Boulder’s Mbira players that will transport you to the heart of Africa, where the ancient and modern converge in a harmonious celebration of music, culture, and community.
Headlining the evening is Zimbira, a 10-piece genre-defying band playing music steeped in the traditional music of Southern Africa with traditional and modern instrumentation. Audiences are immediately set into motion when they hear the intoxicating, rhythmic and melodic sounds galvanized by Zivanai Masango the band’s leader and innovator.
