James Holmes Found Guilty in Aurora Shootings

“From the prosecution’s perspective, they don’t really care if he’s mentally ill, pain is pain and that’s the argument for death.”

Michael Radelet professor of sociology at the University of Colorado Boulder, an expert on the use of the death penalty in the United States and co-author of the book “Executing the Mentally Ill” says that it’s no surprise that James Holmes was found guilty as it is very difficult to win a not guilty by insanity defense. Radelet says mental illness will be a key component of the next phase in the trial, whether Holmes will be sentenced to death.
