Judge denies Trump’s block to Colorado funding for low-income families

On Friday, the Trump administration was ordered to keep funding rolling to Colorado’s childcare and safety-net programs. The programs help aid the poorest families in Colorado. The block to Trump’s plan to freeze $10 billion in funding for low-income families in Colorado, California, New York, Minnesota and Illinois was ordered by Judge Vernon S. Broderick. All states targeted were Democratic-led states.

According to the Colorado Sun, Alex Adams, the assistant secretary at the Administration for Children and Families, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, alleged the programs were fraudulent and provided services to undocumented immigrants. The programs targeted by Adams provided cash assistance to low-income families, funding for most of Colorado’s child care payment assistance program and help for at-risk youths and adults.

Had the freeze taken effect, thousands of families in Colorado would have been left without the help that they rely on to stay afloat.

Colorado House approves housing bill

The Colorado House approved a bill Friday that would make it easier for schools and universities to build housing on their land, even if it isn’t zoned for residential construction. It would also apply to local housing authorities and certain nonprofit organizations. The bill now faces debate in the Senate. Known as the HOME Act, the measure is based in part on a proposal that failed last year. It’s one of several bills lawmakers are considering this year aimed at increasing Colorado’s housing supply and making it easier to build affordable housing statewide

UNC’s Center for Rural Education in danger of closing

The University of Northern Colorado’s Center for Rural Education is in dire straits as it waits on proposed cuts to the state budget. The Greeley Tribune reports the Center’s full one-point-two million dollars in funding comes from the state. If it’s cut, the center will close as soon as July. UNC officials say the loss of the center would make it even harder to recruit and retain quality teachers in rural schools. They’ve sent a letter to the Joint Budget Committee asking them to consider the center’s value. Colorado has 146 small rural school districts.
