It has been just over one year since Egypt’s military leaders removed Mohamed Morsi, the country’s first democratically elected president, from office. In recent months there has been a crackdown on journalists with three Al Jazeera journalists recently being sentenced to years in an Egyptian jail. For 12 years Veronica Balderas Igelsias worked as a journalist in Egypt for CNN en Espanol. She is now based in Boulder and spoke to Maeve Conran about the current reality facing journalists in the country.
