How to talk to your kids about race

The idea of race is a significant part of American culture. It affects many aspects of people’s lives:  the places they live; the people they hang out with, date and marry; and the schools they attend. Because the idea of race is such a tangible part of American life, it is only natural that children will have questions.

History Colorado will host two workshops on talking to kids about race, as a companion program to History Colorado’s RACE: Are We So Different? travelling exhibit that will be at the History Colorado Center until January 4, 2015.

We hear from Alison Salutz and Deborah Radman with History Colorado and from Dena Samuels, Assistant Professor, Women’s & Ethnic Studies and the Director of the Matrix Center for the Advancement of Social Equity & Inclusion, University of Colorado – Colorado Springs.  Dr. Samuels says that ignoring race, being “color-blind” is in and of itself a form of racism.
