Hiking the Continental Divide Trail

“Hiking is a way of life for me. It allows me to immerse myself in nature, and to fall into a rhythm that I can’t find elsewhere.”

In 2011, Mary Moynihan embarked on a nearly 3,000 mile journey on foot and solo-hiked the Continental Divide Trail from Mexico to Canada. Moynihan has written about her experiences in a new book Married to the Trail.

Moynihan is now on track to become the first woman to complete the Calendar Triple Crown (CTC) and solo hike all three continental trails (the Appalachian, Pacific Crest and Continental Divide) in one year.

“You might ask why I’d want to hike these trails again, and more importantly why I’d want to walk for an entire year. For me, to walk these trails again, is to see them in a new light. Just like when we return to our favorite place, be it a trail, river, rock or pub, we do it because it holds a special place in our heart, and we find comfort despite the occasional discomfort. But more important, it’s because there is the ability to see a little bit more, whether it’s hidden in the landscape or hidden within ourselves.”
