Hear Conversations Between Community Members with Opposing Views from the One Small Step Project Abby O'Brien
Next Thursday, Dec. 18, KGNU invites the public to join us at the Longmont Museum for a listening and screening event. At this free event, you’ll hear excerpts of our StoryCorps One Small Step conversations, when community members from opposite sides of the political aisle sat down to get to know one another.
On today’s Morning Magazine, we heard from the co-coordinators of the project, Sam Fuqua and Rossana Longo Better.
Discussion topics ranged from identity, to immigration, to the economy. ”I was surprised at how much people are really craving meaningful conversation with people who they wouldn’t otherwise engage with,” said Fuqua.
“The best part of this job that we have been doing has been seeing how people come together. They are two strangers, and then suddenly by the end of a 50 minute conversation…there’s a connection, a deep connection,” said Longo Better. She said several participants even exchanged phone numbers and made plans to spend more time with their conversation partner.
The Dec. 18 event will be free with a catered reception beginning at 5 p.m. After the StoryCorps listening event and moderated discussions, there will be a screening of the documentary Stripped for Parts, which is about how hedge funds are destroying local newspapers. Free tickets and more information here.
This story aired on the Morning Magazine, KGNU’s weekday morning show featuring in-depth discussions on local news issues. Click here to listen to other episodes of the Morning Magazine.
