Mid-Air Plane Collision Kills Three

A mid-air collision involving two light aircraft killed three people Saturday in Boulder County. The collision occurred just before 9 AM over Niwot Road.

First responders found a destroyed Cessna aircraft on the south side of the road. Remains of the second aircraft, a Sonex Xenos, were on the north side. Flight logs show two passengers – an instructor and a student – were in the Cessna. The pilot was the only person aboard the Sonex.

Authorities did not immediately identify the deceased in order to notify their next of kin first.

Aurora Apartment Complex Thefts

Residents of Parkside Collective apartments in Aurora have reported dozens of burglary incidents since an explosion forced residents out of their homes last week.

Property owners allowed tenets into their apartments to gather their belongings Saturday for the first time since an apartment explosion on September 10. According to the Aurora Sentinel, one resident said when she returned to her apartment she found it “ransacked” and discovered that small valuables such as electronics and jewelry were missing. A spokesperson from the Aurora Police Department told 9News that at least 10 people filed reports Saturday and about 20 more over the past week.

Some residents still have not returned to their homes, and the police expect there could be more reports to come.

Pandemic Homeless Hotels Close

A Quality Inn in Denver which became an emergency shelter during the pandemic has closed after its lease ended late last week. The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless began leasing the hotel from its private owner using FEMA funding in 2020.

According to a press release, many of those displaced say they will likely have to move back to the streets or into shelters. Housekeys Action Network Denver or HANDS has found other available spots in temporary rooms with help from GoFundMe and The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless.

Donald Whitehead, executive director of the National Coalition for the Homeless told the Aurora Sentinel that while it was sad to see the temporary housing in hotels close, “it provided an important blueprint for homeless advocates around the country.”

Arrested Woman Injured After Train Struck Patrol Car

Police arrested and then detained the 20-year-old Greeley woman as part of a high-risk traffic stop Friday.

According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigations the police put the woman in the back of their squad car that was parked on the railroad tracks before it was run over by a train. According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the situation started as a road rage incident with an alleged firearm in Fort Lupton.

When the police were searching her vehicle, a northbound freight train was traveling and struck the police car where the suspect was detained. The woman was rushed to Greeley hospital, where her condition is unknown.

Colorado Awarded Record Funding For Water Improvements

The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has awarded the state of Colorado $121Million for water infrastructure improvements. The funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which allocated over fifty billion dollars to the EPA to aid communities to access reliable, safe and clean drinking water, clean up pollution and safeguard vital waterways and collect and treat wastewater to protect public health.

The EPA’s State Revolving Funds (SRF) are part of President Biden’s Justice40 Initiative, which plans to grant at least 40% of the benefits from certain federal programs to historically under-served communities. According to an EPA press release, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law represents the largest ever funding opportunity for investing in the nation’s water infrastructure.
