Ballots mailed out
Ballots for Boulder County, Denver, and the metro area have been mailed out and are on their way to registered voters. Voters can submit ballots at ballot drop boxes available 24/7 until 7 p.m. on Nov. 4, Election day. In-person Vote Centers will open starting Oct. 27. The Boulder County Clerk and Recorder says to allow about a week for your ballot to arrive before reaching out if you don’t see it. Mail-in voting is safe and secure, and voters are encouraged to submit their ballots early to ensure they are received on time by the county clerk. Learn more about the upcoming elections and how to have your voice heard by searching going to your county clerk’s website.
Flooding in Colorado
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis verbally declared a disaster emergency for flooding in the southwest part of the state as heavy rain from the Tropical Storm Priscilla caused flooding, washed out roads, mudslides and rockslides across the region between Friday and Sunday. The Denver Post reported nearly 400 homes were evacuated Saturday in La Plata County after floodwaters breached a levee, and more than 100 were damaged. Some were estimated to have as much as 2 feet of water inside. More rain is expected in western Colorado early Monday morning, and the counties of La Plata, Archuleta, Hinsdale and San Juan remain in a flood warning in effect until Tuesday night.
Indigenous Peoples Day
Today is Indigenous Peoples Day. From 12pm-6pm in Denver City park, there will be an Indigenous Peoples Day celebration, with live dance performances, vendors, food trucks, and family activities. Last week President Trump signed a proclamation declaring the day to be Columbus Day, which he said he wants to “bring back from the ashes.” The day was declared Indigenous Peoples Day by Boulder and Denver in 2016, and Fort Collins in 2022.
Nederland fire update
The fire that swept through Nederland’s central shopping center on Thursday has destroyed more than 30% of the town’s businesses, according to Denver 7. While no injuries were reported, the town’s only grocery store was closed all weekend. Now, neighbors, local businesses, and volunteers are coming together to support one another. Dan Vollmer, a local realtor, launched a GoFundMe that has raised $200,000, supporting 18 businesses and about 100 employees. Vollmer said the town is so close-knit. Everybody takes care of everybody else.”
The sheriff’s office is asking for anyone who has photos or video from before, during or after the fire to contact the office at [email protected], by phone at 303-441-3674, or at bouldercounty.gov/safety/sheriff.
