General strike today

Activists are calling for a nationwide general strike today, Friday, Jan. 30, to protest the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown and the killing of two people by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Minnesota. The National Shutdown campaign website calls for a “nationwide day of no school, no work, and no shopping” across the US, and lists at least 10 corresponding events scheduled in Colorado, including in Arvada, Golden, Fort Collins, and several in Denver. That information can be found at nationalshutdown.org.

Large-scale payment errors cost Colorado $20 million

Colorado Medicaid officials have corrected a discrepancy in ambulance billing this past November, which is projected to save around $33 million in this current fiscal year. The issue came from guidance regarding ambulance providers in the metro Denver area, as the state had been telling these providers to bill using the specialty ambulance rate, set at $669 in 2025. Medicaid officials told Colorado lawmakers last Tuesday that the rate should have been set at $65, approximately a discrepancy.

The joint state-federal management plan for the Colorado River’s largest water basins, Lakes Powell and Mead, will end this fall, prompting officials to prioritize negotiations. The expiring regulations allowed for larger amounts of water to be sent downstream to drought-heavy cities, such as Los Angeles and Phoenix, which Colorado officials have criticized. Mitchell and other state officials hope to negotiate a plan that will require the states downstream of the Colorado River to rectify their high water use.
