Alexis Kenyon interviewed KGNU’s Digital Engagement Intern and CU Boulder student Juanita Hurtado on the importance of Hispanic Heritage Month and the mixed feelings toward the use of the word Hispanic.

Their interview introduces Juanita’s conversation with CU professor Kristie Soares, about Soares’ new book “Playful Protest: The Political Work of Joy in Latinx Media,” which analyzes the use of joy in Puerto Rican and Cuban diasporas as a political tool to shift dominant narratives of discrimination.

Kristie Soares is the co-director of LGBTQ+ studies at CU Boulder as well as an assistant professor for the Department of Women and Gender Studies.
