Farm Animal Activists at CU Boulder

“I think every person who eats animals should be aware of exactly what they are eating, and how the animal arrived on their table.’

The 10 billion Lives North American Tour is the brain child of the farm animal rights movement, advocacy group known by the acronym FARM. As Brandon Boland reports, they stopped at CU-Boulder recently as part of their national campaign visiting college campuses.

Many meat eaters don’t take the time to think about how the animal makes its way from the farm, to the supermarket, and ultimately onto their plates. Consumers don’t often ask themselves where the meat came from, or how the animals they are eating were treated.

There is a group of concerned individuals who dedicate their lives spreading a message that they believe to be the truth. Through a graphic 4 min video some people’s diets change overnight.

“My name is Jillian and we are part of the 10 billion lives tour. It is a nonprofit campaign part of a non profit from the FARM – the farm animal rights movement and we go around the country to these different facilities and encourage people to move towards a plant-based diet to reduce the harm and suffering of countless animals.”

The non profit group crusades across the country in a small bus which is used as a mobile command center equipped with viewing screens along the sides. Students, professors, and the general public are invited to watch a 4 min video that depicts the graphic nature and reality of how some farm animals are treated and killed.

Professor Rachel M.Silvy brought a group of students to view the 4 min video. She says everyone should be aware of where their meat comes from

“I think every person who eats animals should be aware of exactly what they are eating, and how the animal arrived on their table. And so if you are making the choice to eat an animal, then I think it is your responsibility to watch videos like this to see the reality of how animals are treated in our culture.”

The Farm Animal Rights Movement is using what they call the “ pay-per-view “ method. They give each viewer $1 to watch the video. The goal is to encourage people to eat less meat. According to their website www.10billiontour.org, 80% of viewers commit to eating fewer animal products. After watching the film CU senior Bree Thomas said she was impacted by the images

“ I was not expecting it to be that graphic, it was good to watch it to see what actually happens”

The FARM activists are driving thousands of miles across the country to share their message and raise awareness to anyone who will give them the time. The bus they drive in, is also the bus they eat in, sleep in, and literally live out of while they are on the road. During their tour they will reach hundreds, maybe thousands of people.
