Booktalk: Traveler Ella Morton, co-author of “Atlas Obscura: An Explorer’s Guide To The World’s Hidden Wonders”

Host Diana Korte speaks with New Zealand-born, Australia-raised, Brooklyn-based writer Ella Morton ( who co-authored the first title in this book collection, the “Atlas Obscura: An Explorer’s Guide To The World’s Hidden Wonders.

For sure this is not your usual travel guide. Ella describes the book’s beginnings and how it came to be filled with some 700 sights you’ve likely not seen. Not many people have. Such as the Stairway to Heaven in Hawaii, the secret apartment in the Eiffel Tower and that flaming hole in the Turkmenistan desert.

The most recent book in the Atlas Obscura collection published in 2024 is “Wild Life: An Explorer’s Guide to the World’s Living Wonders.”

This edition of Booktalk originally aired April 14, 2017.
